El presente artículo analiza el cambio de función que el puerto de Cartagena, en lacosta caribeña, vivió a lo largo del período temprano de la Colonia en el siglo XVI,pasando de ser una de las primeras factorías comerciales de intercambio de la regiónCaribe (con Santo Domingo y Cuba) hasta convertirse en un puerto colector de la redde circuitos de metales preciosos establecidos con la colonización del interior delcontinente. Cartagena fue punto de intercambio de oro y plata por mercancíaseuropeas, actividad que la convirtió en uno de los puertos mas destacados de la regióndel Caribe.

ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the role experienced by the port of Cartagena de Indias in theColombian Caribbean Coast during the early colonial period in the sixteenth century. Itis argued that the city shifted its function from a convenient trading outpost for theSpanish settlements of the islands (Santo Domingo and Cuba) to an strategic hobbleand shipment center of the precious metals mined following the settlement of the inland.Cartagena became the main point of commercial exchange, where gold and silver weretraded by European manufactured goods, activity that made the city one of themainstays of the Spanish system of ports in the Caribbean.
