Abstract
Vitae is a video game created to socialize the contents of El Decreto 1279 of the Ministry of National Education among professors of the University of Antioquia. The purpose of this article is to reveal, through the systematization of the video game creation experience, the role played by narratives in educational video games. It starts with a theoretical exploration of the concepts of gamification, storytelling and game-based learning in order to review the relationship of human beings with narratives and games and the way in which both expressions of culture have gained ground within educational contexts. Then, the methodology implemented for the development of the game is exposed, with the objective that those who are interested in making a video game with these characteristics, or similar ones, can identify the steps to follow and recognize the findings and learnings that were had in this process, so that they can apply what is useful in their own exercises. Finally, important aspects about the role of narratives in video games are identified: the ability of these to create a context that allows the player to enhance their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to finish the experience and obtain the achievement stands out.
