Este ensayo analiza el impacto de la traducción y publicación en San Juan Puerto Rico delmanual de estética El arte de la belleza o secretos del tocador, de la bailarina europea LolaMontes hacia 1862. Este manual de belleza, escrito para mujeres y hombres, fue censuradopor la Iglesia Católica por su contenido transgresor y por quien lo escribía. El manual proponíaun concepto de mujer en abierta contradicción con el ideario Católico de mujer y de hombre.Además, Para la Iglesia resultaba peligroso y anticatólico los escritos propuestos por unabailarina, mujer que se desenvolvía en el mundo de lo público, escenario éste vedado paralas mujeres de buena conducta y sujetas al ordenamiento establecido. Este celo, está articuladoa los planes de que poseía La Iglesia Católica Puerto Rico en el siglo XIX, de reconfigurarsus relaciones con la sociedad, para enfrentar las filtraciones del mundo moderno. Laexaltación del papel de la mujer y del matrimonio son manifestaciones importante de esteproceso.

ABSTRACS.

This essay analyzes the impact of the translation and publication in San Juan, Puerto Rico,of the aesthetics manual The Art of Beauty or the Secrets of the Boudoir, written in 1862, bythe European dancer Lola Montes. This manual, written for women and men alike, wascensured by the Catholic Church owing to its negative content, and because of its author. Itproposed a profile of woman openly contrary to the Catholic ideal. Besides, the Churchconsidered it a dangerous and anti Catholic writing made by a dancer, a woman that was toopublic. Good women that followed the Church’s rules could not be public. The zeal shownby the Puerto Rican Catholic Church in the 19th. Century, was articulated to its plans ofrestructuring its relations to society in order to face the new challenges of the modern world.The exultation of woman’s role in society and of Catholic marriage is an important elementof those plans.
