Abstract
Objective: The main objective of this work is to review the benefits reported in the scientific literature in the last decade on the consumption of curcumin present in Curcuma longa in the prevention and/or treatment of liver diseases. Search strategy: Thorough search in the main scientific databases using Curcuma longa, curcumin, liver diseases, prevention, treatment as keywords. Analysis of published articles and scientific documents. Inclusion criteria: bibliographic reviews, experimental, quasi-experimental studies or clinical trials published between 2013 and March 2023, where the benefits of curcuma longa in the prevention and/or treatment of liver diseases will be analysed. Results: There are different studies that demonstrate the antioxidant potential of curcumin by increasing the expression of antioxidant enzymes (Glutathione, glutathione synthase (GTS), cytochrome P450 oxidase (CYP-450)) or by directly inhibiting those enzymes responsible for oxidative damage such as metalloproteinase- 8 (MMP-8) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). In addition to having an anti-inflammatory capacity by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), factor NF-κB, prostaglandin type 2 (PGE 2) and TNF and Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β). Conclusions: Curcumin influences the expression of enzymes related to redox processes by neutralizing reactive oxygen species, which in the long term can be one of the main causes of damage to liver functions.
