VECINDAD, TERRITORIOS Y PAISAJES DE LA CULTURA ESCLAVA EN TORNO A LAS HACIENDAS CAFETERAS DE RÍO DE JANEIRO: ALGUNOS APORTES

En el presente artículo apuntamos algunas reflexiones sobre las investigaciones de arqueología histórica de la esclavitud. Destacamos la posibilidad de pensar los paisajes en la plantación como espacios deproducción de la cultura material de los esclavos. Africanos de diversos orígenes pueden haber constituido espacios de autonomía en torno a las senzalas, bosques de vecindad entre haciendas y campos de economía propia. En la región cafetera de Río de Janeiro, destacamos las narrativas de fugitivos y confrontaciones de su captura revelando cómo se trataba defronteras móviles de circulación de los esclavos en la plantación.

ABSTRACT

In this article we reflect on aspects of research in the historical archaeology of slavery. We stress the possibility of thinking of plantation land scapesas spaces of production for the slaves’ material culture. Africans from diverse backgrounds may have established autonomous spaces around theslave quarters, in neighboring forests between the plantations, and in the fields they planted for their own subsistence. Regarding the coffee-growingregion of Rio de Janeiro, we highlight the narratives of fugitives and theconflicts involved in their apprehension, revealing how they formed flexibleboundaries for the movement of slaves on the plantations.
