Abstract
The critical rationalism of Karl Popper (1902-1984) is one of the key aspects of his philosophy because it contributes to the development of knowledge and to seeking what is best for human beings in terms of freedom, peace, justice and tolerance. This chapter analyze Popper's critical rationalism as a condition of possibility for the open society and its realization in democratic states. To do this, first, the foundations of critical rationalism are studied from Popper's philosophy of science; then, the paradox of critical rationalism is presented and resolved from the Fries trilemma; then, the conditions of possibility for critical rationalism in contemporary societies are raised; and, finally, criticisms of this type of rationalism are presented. It is observed that despite certain limits that Popper's critical rationalism may contain, this philosophy contains a valid methodology of knowledge that allows the human being to elaborate new conjectures that lead in turn to new refutations.
