ABSTRACT This essay develops a detailed revision of the existence of a systematic racial way of thinking during the end of the XVIII Century and the first half of the XX Century in Cartagena, having as a reference the Colombian Nation discourse. During this time, the elites that decided to work on the configuration of national projects made reference to the “negro”, mulatto and indigenous components that belonged to their own social structure and were seen as barbarians, inferior and uncivilized people. This is the framework in which the Afro-Colombian intellectuals such as Jorge Artel and Juan José Nieto developed their hard and productive literary and journalistic work.
