ABSTRACTIn Fanny Buitrago’s Bahia Sonora, 1976, the Caribbean islander (San Andres Islas, Colombia) is defined beyond the tourist view by hunting stories that occur in everyday life. His essence can be seen in the varied popular manifestations that are depicted in the stories of Bahia Sonora. The African legacy that rules the Caribbean basin conjugates with English Puritanism and Catholicism originating syncretism of practices and beliefs that are the basis of Caribbean identity. The mythic thought of primitive ethnic groups, superstition, witchcraft, polytheism, oral tradition and the carnival are manifestations, habits and beliefs of a primitive community. Thus, Fanny Buitrago defines Caribbean islanders taking into account the impetuous arrival of modernity and the island government which set aside primitive life and traditions. KEY WORDS Caribbean, islander, beliefs, syncretism, identity, mythic, ethnic groups, traditions and modernity ER -
