ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the effects of the use of photography in Bello animal by Fanny Buitrago. Firstly, it examines the incorporation and description of pictures as a strategy that allows the creation as well as the deliberated confusion of several narrative levels. This confusion leads to a conflict between the real and the unreal, the material world and its representation in images that disseminates from the world inside the novel towards its referential scenario: the city of Bogotá, Colombia. In this context, the essay reviews the representation of Colombian society in the novel as a simulacrum or as a “society of the spectacle”, according to Jean Baudrillard and Guy Debord’s concepts. Finally, the author proposes a reading of Bello animal as an allegory that portrays the nation as threatened by its representation in the media as well as by the contradictions inner to this representation.

KEY WORDS

Simulacrum, show, nation, image, representation, society.</p>}, number={2}, journal={Cuadernos de Literatura}, author={Salgado, Nadia Celis}, year={2005}, month={dic.} }
